Emerald Lake

My dad and I parked our 30 Foot Regal Motorhome on the overnight parking lot right at Emerald Lake. My dad was a little bit hesitant weather we would be ok to overnight in the parking lot and not on a campground but that was no problem since we were not the only ones that decided to sleep right at the lake. Emerald Lake is one of the most admired destinations in Yoho National Park, with an unmatched diversity of both activities and landscapes suited to the enthusiastic traveler.
The hike around the lake, clocking in at about an hour, is one of the least strenuous but most rewarding in the park. An incredible breadth of geological features can be viewed from the lake, including the world-famous Burgess Shale fossil beds, the Michael glacier, and an avalanche slope carpeted by meadows where moose often graze.
Emerald Lake is a fantastic place to see bald eagles, moose, and ospreys are a common sight, as are waterfowl such as loons and mergansers.

Location
Emerald Lake located approximately 200 km (125 miles) from Calgary, Alberta. To reach the lodge from Calgary, leave via 16th Avenue heading west. This route turns into the Trans Canada Highway #1 - which you follow directly to Field, British Columbia. Two km (1 mile) past the town of Field you will approach a turn-off clearly marked for Emerald Lake.

In the Canadian Rockies

After that is all done we leave Calgary far behind us and move straight towards the famous Canadian Rockies. The Destination for today is the area around Banff where we want to stay in a provincial park campground. The highlight of the day is certainly our fantastic steak with rice and broccoli that we enjoy with a nice cold beer over the fireplace.

Flight from Vancouver to Calgary and drive to Banff

Our early morning flight from Vancouver to Calgary only takes about an hour. Landed in Calgary we did not get tempted to make our way with the bus search for the rental station but hoped in a taxi. The hand over procedure happens fairly quick and we end up on the road already at 11 am. Now first thing is to get used to this big vehicle. My dad and I are still a bit suspicious and extra cautious on our first few kilometers trying to find the nearest supermarket with an extra wide parking lot to fill up our fridge.
